The moment Drew Allar went down with a season-ending injury, Penn State’s season went down with him. He has since recovered and is now going to be part of the NFL draft, but it seems that analysts are divided on him, with some believing he could be taken early, while others believe he could slide down well below expectations like Shedeur Sanders did last year.
In other words, Drew Allar has become a polarizing figure in the NFL draft. However, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has been speaking with scouts and other team representatives, and many of them were blunt in their assessment of the Penn State star, who had been a starter for six years.
“I used to be a big Allar guy, but he scares me,” one AFC executive said. “He hasn’t gotten better. But he’s definitely talented. And I guess maybe he’s a developmental player. I’ve been waiting for him to really become a guy for a few years now, and he’s kind of been the opposite of that.”
Another person, a scout for an NFC team, stated that he was good in 2024 and has the ability to make throws most people cannot. However, he also noted that he has been very inconsistent.
As for the teams interested in him, he has had meetings with the Jets, Dolphins, Colts, Cardinals and Steelers and much like the others, he has had some mixed reviews.
“He’s smart. He works hard. He prepares like a pro. He won and can operate a pro-style offense and he can handle a lot at the line of scrimmage that they give some of those guys,” an AFC scout said.
This inconsistency could turn a lot of teams off, or at least bump his stock down. Many still admit he still needs polishing, which is why he might end up being picked around Rounds 3 or 4.
Analyst Says Drew Allar Lacks Precision
Meanwhile, over at ESPN, draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. is also a bit conflicted over Drew Allar. On one hand, he has a beautiful throw, on the other, he often does not hit his targets.
“Drew Allar is an intriguing guy,” he said. “He makes some beautiful throws and then it’ll be the head scratcher, whether it’s a decision, not seeing it or being just a little off target and not precise.”
This assessment just shows that many are in agreement that Drew Allar may have a lot of potential, but he is just too inconsistent and his throws often fail to hit their marks.
