It appears that the fiasco surrounding the future of Brendan Sorsby has finally ended. Texas Tech’s billionaire booster Cody Campbell has confirmed on X that the Red Raiders will not be going ahead with Sorsby’s contract for the new season amid concerns over his gambling addiction, which marks a huge step in the future of college sports as a whole.
Sorsby had been offered relief by a Texas judge in the form of a temporary injunction earlier this month that allowed him eligibility for Texas Tech in the coming season, but amid backlash from fans, teams, experts and the NCAA, the University seems to have finally backed down.
Campbell’s lengthy statement confirmed that Sorsby won’t be playing for them in the coming season, but it also targeted the concerns around college sports in general as well as maintaining that Texas Tech did nothing wrong throughout the harrowing process. Campbell also confirmed that no NIL reimbursement will be demanded from Sorsby, saying “Texas Tech will not seek return of any amounts already paid to Brendan through his NIL agreements.”
That being said, fans didn’t take too kindly to Campbell defending his University’s stance, and flooded the comments section with their own thoughts.
“Whatever you have to tell yourself, man. But words have meaning and integrity isn’t something you can bend with influence or money or whataboutism. Everyone involved showed their true colors here,” one fan said.
“Cody found something something he couldn’t buy his way out of. Big 12 1, Cody Zero,” another said.
“Cry us a river. You lost loser. Get your grimy hands out of College football,” one said.
“So you’re a loud mouth and a coward?!? Big money without a shred of integrity,” another wrote.
“Cheating didn’t work. Sand aggy loses again,” one said.
What Did Sorsby Have to Say?
While Brendan Sorsby has been going through gambling de-addiction, there has been limited public messaging from the quarterback amid the entire saga that is unfolding in front of the world.
After being released by the Texas Tech Red Raiders, however, Sorsby put out a statement confirming that he was moving on.
Sorsby wrote, “Forever Grateful For My Time At Texas Tech. Wreck Em,” on Instagram along with a quote confirming his departure, and with the NFL supplemental draft now in his future, the story is perhaps only just getting started.
