Steve Sarkisian has made the headlines a few times this year’s offseason; one of those times was when he made the bold statement that his Texas team’s twos and threes can beat a Big 12 team’s main players in a matchup.
Sarkisian’s comments were directed at Joey McGuire’s Texas Tech Red Raiders, as both teams face very different schedules in the upcoming season; the Longhorns are the team with the tougher one on their hands.
McGuire and the Red Raiders officials weren’t too happy about Sarkisian’s statements and even offered to pay for the buyout of both their games in week 1; however, Texas didn’t agree to that.
During his conversation on “Up and Adams”, Sarkisian first shared that he probably could’ve conveyed his thoughts better; however, he still believes the difference in their strength of schedules is an issue.
“That’s kind of how I feel. It’s like I know what our schedule looks like, and I know it’s probably, if not the hardest, one of the most difficult schedules in the country. On the same note, you know, Texas Tech’s got a really good football team. It was not a knock at Texas Tech. It was more looking at the schedule that they’re playing. And I think people took it the wrong way, like I was trying to attack Tech’s quality of the team to have. That wasn’t. It was about their opponents. And really, their opponents should have been the ones that were trying to get mad at me, not Tech. But, hey, you know, to each their own. Sometimes you hurt people’s feelings. That’s okay. We’re all big boys. We’re going to be all right.”
Texas Tech Booster Hits Back at Steve Sarkisian Over Schedule Remarks
Cody Campbell, who is a popular Texas Tech Red Raiders booster, didn’t hold back about his thoughts on Sarkisian’s comments.
Earlier during a conversation with Pat McAfee, Campbell confidently said that the Red Raiders would love to play the Longhorns; however, saying that Sarkisian’s team can name a name place and they’ll be there.
Talking about the situation on Dan Dakich’s show on June 10th, Campbell said that it was all fun and games, adding that if Sarkisian were going to run his mouth, they would, of course, fight back.
“That’s West Texas, right? I mean, we’re not going to take a punch and then not give one back, right? And UT loves to do that kind of thing.” Campbell said.
The Red Raiders have been the point of conversation this year, with their star quarterback being involved in a gambling scandal.
