Syracuse Orange head coach Fran Brown shared a concerning injury update on his top wide receiver recruit, Calvin Russell III. The receiver sustained an injury during practice and is announced out for an indefinite period of time.
The four-star recruit out of Opa Locka (Fla.) Northwestern was a member of Orange’s 2026 recruiting class. According to the Rivals Rankings, he was the No. 6 overall prospect in the state, the No. 11 wide receiver and the No. 62 overall prospect in the class.
On Tuesday, the school announced the update but did not mention whether Russell will be available for the upcoming season.
“Calvin Russell III suffered an injury in practice that will cause him to miss an indefinite period of time,” Brown’s statement read. “I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationship Calvin, his family and I have. Calvin, Best believe Orange Nation’s got your back!”
Calvin Russell III Took Time But Chose Fran Brown’s Syracuse
Calvin Russell III was diligent during his recruiting as he made a decision considering all factors. As a top recruit, he received more than 50 scholarships from top football programs in the country.
His final contenders included Miami, Michigan, LSU, Florida State, Oregon and Syracuse. He initially committed to Syracuse in July, but during the signing period, he delayed signing his National Letter of Intent. Russell wanted more time to decide whether he was making the right decision by going to Brown’s team.
“I just wanted to make sure I made the right decision,” Russell said. “Just needed some more time to think it through and really see if it is a place I want to call home, and I came to that realization. Coach Fran has my best interest at heart, and that’s where I want to play.”
After Russell signed with the Orange, Brown was elated.
“He hit me with the ‘yo cousin.’ I said What’s up, cuz? He said, I have your best interests at heart. I love you, your mom, and your family. You’ve been here a bunch of times, and I’ve shown you nothing but respect. I just got so much love for Coach Fran,” Brown said.
It remains to be seen if Syracuse releases more updates on Russell.
