Mary Kay Cabot turned heads when she took a subtle jab at UNC coach Bill Belichick and girlfriend Jordon Hudson during her Bill Nunn Award acceptance speech at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Gold Jacket Dinner last year. Now, a year after her viral moment, Cabot is reflecting on the lead-up to the speech.
In an exclusive interview with “Awful Announcing,” Cabot revealed that her daughter played a role in the joke eventually making it into her speech by giving the Browns insider the go-ahead:
“I bounced it off my daughter, who, at the time, and still does, some stand-up comedy in New York City, where she lives. She was 24 at the time, but I always kid around with her. She’s one of my life advisors because she’s so smart.
Cabot said she had no regrets about the joke.
“I had no idea it would go viral the way it did. But it was all in good fun, and I still have no regrets. If I had it to do over again, I would tell the joke again.”
Cabot has been a Cleveland Browns beat writer for nearly four decades and has covered several head coaches, including Bill Belichick during his stint as head coach.
During her acceptance speech Cabot poked fun at Belichick’s relationship with Hudson saying:
“You see, if you start out with Bill Belichick, no one can rattle you after that. If Bill didn’t like something I wrote, he’d call and yell at me. If you asked a dumb question, he’d call you out. Eventually, I had to learn to stand up to him. During one of those yelling matches, I told him, if you don’t have the ‘footballs’ to say that to the guys, then don’t say it to me. Bam.
“But now I totally understand why Bill gave me such a hard time. I was 28 at the time, and he just couldn’t relate to a woman that old.”
Mary Kay Cabot Speaks Out On Browns’ QB Battle
While Shedeur Sanders took over signal-calling responsibilities midway through last season after the team’s decision to bench Dillon Gabriel, the former Colorado star did not blow people’s minds away with his performance.
Sanders finished with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions over an eight-game span.
With Deshaun Watson now fully healthy after spending last season on injured reserve, there is set to be a battle to determine who will be the starting quarterback for the Browns this season.
Cabot revealed that while she was certain that Watson would reclaim his spot as the face of the Browns’ offense, Sanders has shown signs of command over the offense through OTAs and mandatory minicamps. This has led to more doubts over who should be the starter as both quarterbacks are making their case.
“It’s sort of a dead heat for that job… I think when Todd Monken says he has two starting quarterbacks, he means it.”
While there have been calls for Sanders to get traded by fans, Cabot believes that is not the case. Sanders being on the roster for next season is almost a certainty. However, who will take the first snap at the start of the regular season is far from decided.
