UNC Football Season Preview: Biggest Opponents, Possible Upsets, and More

As UNC football is aware, Bill Belichick didn’t survive to see a third down year after two down ones as the coach of the New England Patriots following two decades of domination in the NFL. A second consecutive down year for the coach in college football might be the end of his football coaching career. It will fall on Belichick to lead the team into contention.

Of course, his schedule won’t roll over for him and his team. Here’s a look at the biggest opponents on the schedule as well as the toughest.

Top 3 Biggest Opponents On UNC’s Schedule

The first game of the season will occur before the NFL season kicks off, which means all NFL eyes will be on Bill Belichick’s team to see if it was able to pick itself off the mat. The contest will take place at a neutral location and be broadcast on ESPN, so it’s clear that the sports world will be tuned in. It could be the last primetime game with a playoff-like atmosphere of Belichick’s career if the season goes poorly.

The Miami Hurricanes were in the national championship game last season. As such, a win for Belichick’s unit will be perhaps his single best opportunity to show growth in the regular season. Even if the record stays below .500, if he can point to a win over the Hurricanes, he might have a shot to stick around into 2027.

NC State celebrated blowing out the Tar Heels in 2025, and the team will have a chance to respond in 2026. If the team can flip the script, beating NC State will be the cherry on top as the final game of the regular season. Even if things remain at a tepid level again for the Tar Heels, beating NC State would be a chance to show growth for the team and give the unit some momentum going into 2027.

3 Games Where Bill Belichick’s Squad Will Fall Short

Unless things completely turn around from 2025, the North Carolina Tar Heels will be lucky to avoid a blowout against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Notre Dame has finished with at least 10 wins in all but one season dating back to 2017. Expect another successful season for the program, which means teams on unsure footing, like potentially the one led by Bill Belichick, will turn into stepping stones for the Fighting Irish.

The Clemson Tigers have stumbled in recent years, but have managed to avoid a losing year every season since 2010. As such, expect even star-studded teams to be pushed by the program. Belichick’s squad will need to be in top form to avoid stubbing its toe. Unless Belichick can uncover a new Tom Brady-like figure in his quarterback competition, expect the Tar Heels to suffer a loss.

The UConn Huskies are known for their basketball program, but the football squad has turned heads in recent years with 9-4 records in 2025 and 2024. If Belichick goes into the road contest unprepared in a disastrous year, it could be the final nail in Belichick’s coffin.

    Overview

Bill Belichick won’t be coaching just for his job in North Carolina. Most agree this season will define the rest of his professional coaching career. If the Tar Heels have another 4-8 level season, there will be no choice but to conclude the game has passed Belichick. Of course, there’s still a season to be played.
