Ohio State Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs recently shared a quirky story about his former coach and Alabama Crimson Tide legend Nick Saban. On Jan. 19 of this year, Downs was featured on the “I AM NEXT” show by “I AM ATHLETE” on YouTube for an interview to share his experience as a college football player and his goals for the NFL.
In a post by @IAMATHLETEpod on Wednesday, March 11, a clip was shared from the interview, in which Downs was asked by host and former Clemson Tigers running back Darien Rencher about his time with Saban, who has since retired and now serves as an analyst.
“Honestly, just consistency. He always talked about it there. Consistency is like the biggest driver of success. I feel like the discipline that coach Saban attacked every day with, and he was probably, he’s way worse than me. He ate an oatmeal pie every morning. He used to tell me, ‘I wear these same clothes every day for 20 years.’ I’m like, ‘You’re weird.’ But, being the same person every day like he never changed who he was,” Downs shared.
“And that’s why the program was the way that it was. It had the consistency that it had solely because of him. So, yeah,” he continued.
Saban currently serves as a sportscaster and analyst for ESPN. Before this, he was known as a brilliant coach in the sport. His last stint, with the Alabama-based program, lasted 16 years, from 2007 to 2023, during which Downs was briefly part of it. In his run, the 74-year-old won an impressive seven national championships with different college programs.

Caleb Downs’ first year of college football clashed with Nick Saban’s last year of coaching college football in the 2023 season at the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In that campaign, they finished with an overall record of 12-1 (8-0 SEC) as they were the top seed in the SEC standings.
The Crimson Tide were eliminated in the semifinal of the college football playoff that year at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines, losing 27-20.
