Brian Kelly didn’t hesitate when asked about Lane Kiffin’s future at LSU in the recent interview. Tigers are gearing up for the upcoming season and with Kiffin leading the ship, expectations are much higher than ever.
In an interview with USA Today’s Sports, Kelly was asked directly whether Kiffin could win a national championship at LSU.
“I think so,” Kelly said. “That wasn’t yes. Here’s why I would say yes.”
He took a pause and then he elaborated, the reasoning.
Kelly pointed to LSU’s aggressive investment in NIL as the biggest factor. With reports suggesting the Tigers have built a roster valued around $40 million, and managed to recruit the nation’s top-ranked transfers.
“I believe because there’s an investment in that NIL, he’s going to be able to be Lane Kiffin and that’s important. He’s not going to take the 18-year-old kid and develop him all the way through the ranks. And that’s fine because that’s what they wanted. I think, with those things in place, he can win the national championship.,” Kelly added.
There is a serious pressure on Kiffin as we have seen in the past, LSU has already shown little patience for underperformance, moving on from Kelly himself despite a relatively good run. Which means the margin of error is very low.
Paul Finebaum Doubles Down on Lane Kiffin
While Kelly offered a positive outlook on Kiffin, SEC analyst Paul Finebaum took a far more blunt stance.
Finebaum recently shared on the Crain & Cone podcast that Kiffin could soon find himself labeled “overrated” if LSU fails to meet expectations this season. And given the level of investment behind the program, if the team fails to make it to the College Football Playoff, the whole point of bringing Kiffin will be viewed as a disappointment.
“The most intriguing name on whether he’s overrated or not is Lane Kiffin, and I think a year from today, if you have me back and Lane Kiffin has not made the playoffs, I would put him at the top of the list, because it’s so hard to give him total credit for what happened last year.” he said.
For Kiffin, the 2026-27 season is a defining moment. He’s long been viewed as one of college football’s brightest offensive minds, and questions about his ability to win at the highest level have followed him throughout his career.
Now, with elite resources and sky-high expectations, those questions are about to be answered. Whether the whole thing turns out in his favour or not only time will tell.
