“Both Convinced Me”: James Franklin Admits Two People Stopped Him From Quitting Coaching After Penn State Firing

James Franklin names two people who convinced him to rejoin coaching after his Penn State sacking.

James Franklin’s firing after over a decade at Penn State might have been a huge blow to the head coach last year, but he’s since bounced back, taking the head coaching job at Virginia Tech and starting a new chapter in his coaching career. However, if you listen to him now, it appears he might have been on the verge of quitting coaching forever.

Speaking to Adam Breneman, Franklin said that after losing his job at Penn State, he considered leaving coaching for good before being pulled back into it by his wife and his agent.

“I got a guaranteed contract, I don’t have to work, but my wife and my agent were like look you need to go work because not only are you gonna drive yourself crazy, most importantly you’re gonna drive them crazy and then they both convinced me to go on College GameDay at Georgia,” Franklin said.

“I think the biggest thing, Adam, is just you wanna take this job with a clear mind and a clear heart and not be the bitter ball coach and I wanted to make sure if I was gonna take one of these jobs that I could truly give myself to the program, to the players and you don’t have a whole lot of time,” he continued.

Did James Franklin Consider Continuing his Broadcast Duties?

In the same interview, James Franklin was asked whether being on ESPN and broadcasting was something he considered long term, prompting a clear answer from the Hokies head coach.

“I think there’s a ton of value in being out of work and being able to go visit people and gain that perspective or doing TV – I just don’t think I’m ready to do that yet in my career,” Franklin concluded.

Franklin has already revamped his coaching staff at Virginia Tech and is aiming for a strong start to the new college football season.
