After firing Rob Thompson on Tuesday morning, the Philadelphia Phillies were hoping to sign Alex Cora, who was fired by the Boston Red Sox last week. However, Cora turned down the Phillies.
As a result, the Phillies have promoted bench coach Don Mattingly as the interim manager for the rest of the season.
According to reports, Cora turned down the job offer because he wants to spend time with his family.
This update has fans in stitches as one fan blamed the Red Sox for this.
“The Red Sox were so bad they turned Alex Cora into a family man.”
“Wow. The only thing Sox got going for them is I stopped betting on them. Still a #162er but just for the love of the game at this point,” one fan wrote.
“Bro would rather put up with the wife and kids than coach this cluster f**k of a team,” one fan added.
“I would refuse going to Philly too,” another commented.
“Wow could you imagine that move? A week after being canned,” another fan reacted.
“I would also make sure that the team that fired me had to keep paying me to do absolutely nothing. That sounds great actually,” one fan wrote.
Dave Dombrowski Confirms Phillies Reached Out to Alex Cora
The Alex Cora chase by the Phillies received an official confirmation on Tuesday during Dave Dombrowski’s press conference. The Phillies president revealed that the two connected on Saturday night and Sunday morning, but ultimately it didn’t work.
“Yeah, I did. I talked to Alex. We never got down to the nuts and bolts of things, but I did talk to him,” Dombrowski said. “… I talked to him on Sunday morning. We talked about potentially taking the job. I thought—I had told him—I’d really come to the conclusion at that point that if he took it, I was going to make a change. And I thought that he might take it.
“But as time went on over the next day, into Monday morning, it was apparent from his perspective that he wanted to take time with his family. And it wasn’t because of pay, it wasn’t cause he’s paid through the next year. But he just felt that he wanted, at this point, to be a father first and foremost. And so that’s what he had decided.”
Cora has also seemingly confirmed that he is not looking to take up any managerial position for the rest of the 2026 season as he prioritizes family time.
