Bo Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the New York Mets in the offseason after nearly seven seasons with the Blue Jays. Bichette entered his new team hopeful, aiming to help build a resilient starting lineup alongside Juan Soto, Marcus Semien, and Francisco Lindor.
However, the team has begun the season poorly, currently last in the NL East with a 9-19 record. To make matters worse, the Mets were swept at home by the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.
A video of the shortstop looking distraught in the dugout after the shutout loss was posted on social media and drew a flurry of reactions.
Mets fans noticed Bichette’s stress in the dugout and shared their reactions on X.
“The Mets ruined Bo Bichette. What A pathetic franchise,” one fan commented.
“Regretting his life choices,” another fan commented.
“Went from game 7 of the World Series to getting swept by the Rockies,” yet another fan commented.
Other fans commented that Bichette was rethinking his decision to leave the Blue Jays.
“Shoulda stayed in Toronto, kid, better team, better clubhouse, better hitting,” one fan commented.
“I was in the World Series a few months ago. I followed in Soto’s footsteps—World Series to the Queens 3 Ring Circus. Damn me. Damn!” another fan commented.
“I bet the Mets could get the Blue Jays to part with a prospect or two for Bo, and he’d be happy to go back to Toronto,” yet another fan commented.
Could Bo Bichette Activate Opt-Out Clause at the End of the Season?
Considering the Mets’ struggles, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Bichette decided to exercise his player option at the end of the season and become a free agent. His current three-year deal includes two opt-out clauses at the end of the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
Bichette has made a disappointing start with the bat this season, posting a .233 batting average, with 1 HR, 12 RBIs, and .570 OPS in 28 games. He is projected to finish with just six HRs and 69 RBIs this season, and if the ballclub’s downfall continues, we could really see Bichette opt out of his contract and become a free agent at the end of the season.
