Despite the Mets’ tough season, Keith Hernandez, a legendary announcer, might feel worse. During Tuesday’s game against the Royals at Citi Field, which the Mets lost 16-12, Hernandez’s unexpectedly mentioned his family.
He briefly brought it up at the end of the fifth inning, and later, in the sixth, Gary Cohen asked for more details. Hernandez explained that his family line was mostly wiped out because both his daughters, now in their 40s, remain unmarried. This subtly suggested that his family’s lineage might not continue.
“My two (daughters) are in their 40s; they’re not going to have kids. I won’t go into one of them … That’s not gonna happen. So the line is burnt. It’s burnt. It just burned down. There’s no passing down. We’re done. My brother and I are done, we’re done. It just seems like a terrible waste,” Hernandez said.
Fans were quick to share their reactions to the viral moment, which has since been trending on social media.
These reactions illustrate how brutally honest Hernandez can be during broadcasts, which contributes to his greatness as an announcer. However, that honesty is usually reserved for criticizing the Mets when they perform poorly.
After hanging up his cleats in 1990, Hernandez took some time to explore other interests before joining SNY as a sportscaster in 2006.
Keith Hernandez’s Legendary Career With The Mets
Hernandez joined the Mets in 1983 in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, a move widely regarded as one of the greatest in the franchise’s history. He earned three of his five All-Star selections in New York and was named the league’s top defensive first baseman.
An 11-time Gold Glove winner and former MVP, Hernandez won a World Series with the Mets in 1986, after winning one with the Cardinals in 1982. He finished his playing career with the Cleveland Indians in 1990.
Hernandez is now a longtime Mets broadcaster, and the team’s booth, featuring Hernandez, Cohen, and Ron Darling, is among the best in baseball and cherished not only by home fans but by the entire baseball fraternity.
