Philadelphia Phillies president Dave Dombrowski refused to answer when confronted with roster shortcomings and poor results to start the season. His reply has many Phillies fans in fury after the team’s 10-19 start to the season, despite being one of the top five teams in payroll.
It’s almost the end of April and the odds are swaying against the Phillies. The team’s lackluster start is no longer by chance as there are several problems in terms of roster management and weak production, leaving reporters questioning the leadership of Dombrowski and manager Rob Thompson.
While the Phillies got rid of Thompson on Tuesday morning, Dombrowski seemed too unfriendly towards the reports in the press conference.
As expected, fans didn’t respond in kind after watching this refusal of Dombrowski to answer his own shortcomings.
“Zero responsibility from the guy who constructed the team with the 2nd largest payroll and the worst record in MLB. Arrogance at its finest,” one fan wrote.
“What an embarrassing answer. Middleton needs to wake the f**k up and get rid of this loser,” one fan suggested.
“Big D deserved to be fired, not Rob. This sub par roster is his fault. If anyone deserves to lose their job for continuing to make the same mistakes, it’s him,” one fan reacted.
“I had a hard time watching it live. I’d imagine as a player, this guy is not for you,” another commented.
“Tim is one of the best local reporters covering the Phillies right now. He’s not afraid to ask tough questions. Shame on Dombrowski for laughing this question off and refusing to answer. Keep up the great work,” one fan added.
“Good one Dave. You don’t deserve to be that arrogant,” one fan commented.
Phillies Fire Rob Thompson, Who is the Replacement?
In the wake of a lackluster start to the season, the Phillies have decided to fire manager Rob Thompson and appoint Don Mattingly in the interim for the rest of the 2026 season.
Thompson’s tenure with Philadelphia ended after a 9-19 start in the 2026 season, tied for one of the worst records in MLB. Thompson had lost 11 of the last 12 games before receiving his pink slip.
Interestingly, the Phillies actually offered the job to the Boston Red Sox’s fired manager, Alex Cora, but he declined. That led to Mattingly, the team’s bench coach, getting the role.
Mattingly previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins and is also the 2020 NL Manager of the Year.
