Roman Anthony, the Boston Red Sox RF, tried to stay optimistic despite the ongoing chaos and recent coaching staff changes. On Saturday, the Red Sox management abruptly dismissed manager Alex Cora and five other members of the coaching staff, effective immediately.
The news quickly spread through the baseball community, causing fans to worry about the team’s future during these uncertain times. Anthony expressed hope that the situation would improve soon and reaffirmed his loyalty to the team in conversations with reporters.
“We can still win the World Series. I know people on the outside probably don’t agree with that, and a lot of s–t’s going on right now. But for us, and for myself—at least I can speak for myself—the standard for me remains the same. My commitment to this team, this city, and these people is still the same. I still feel the same way. I love where I play, and I want to be here for a long time,” Anthony said.
Red Sox fans online voiced their opinions over Anthony’s comments on the latest managerial changes in the clubhouse. One fan in particular wanted the veteran players on the roster to step up to speak to the press, rather than having the 21-year-old rising star speak up on the latest developments.
“The veterans of the team have to step up. Anthony shouldn’t have to be the team spokesman; that’s the job of the veterans. Jesus Christ, this is embarrassing,” one fan commented.
“Good lord, what an absolute disaster. Can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out after this,” another fan commented.
“Because the Red Sox don’t support their veteran players. They are so focused on building the new face of the franchise that they leave all the other players feeling alienated. Silly organization, honestly,” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans weighed in on whether Trevor Story, Jarren Duran, and Willson Contreras should face the media to answer difficult questions, rather than Anthony.
“I can at least cut Conteras a break cause he’s been here a f—— month, he has almost no stake in this. Story is f—— inexcusable, he’s throwing a baby tantrum cause the manager who played him every day over his future replacement is gone, and he knows his time is up now,” one fan commented.
“The veteran position players are Jarren Duran, Willson Contreras, and Trevor Story. Willson has made it pretty clear he’s not a “sit there and answer questions from the media” player so far this season. Jarren largely doesn’t either,” another fan commented.
“That’s not anything exclusive to Boston, and part of being one of the team veterans is talking to the media and saying a few generic phrases when your team is in a huge hole. It really isn’t that hard to stand in front of your locker for five minutes and answer questions. It is notable in any market when the main guys refuse to do so,” yet another fan commented.
Roman Anthony Voiced Praise Over Chad Tracy After Series Win Against Orioles
Chad Tracy was named interim manager of the Red Sox after the sacking of Cora on Saturday. Tracy scored big in his opening game at the helm as Boston beat the Orioles in the series finale on Sunday, thereby claiming the series win in Camden Yards to go 11-17 for the season.
After the match, Anthony reflected on the players’ outing under Tracy on Sunday and expressed optimism about his interim stint as the team’s manager.
“I think when you’re kind of just familiar with somebody during a time like this, and someone like Trace steps in, he’s tremendous at what he does. And I think there’s a reason that, you know, everyone who goes through AAA and is in Worcester with him, loves him,” Anthony said.
“We know he’s going to have our back and do everything he can during this kind of tough time, right? So, again, shocking, right? Didn’t expect it, but now you kind of just adapt and overcome, and Trace is going to be great,” he added.
The Red Sox will now travel to Toronto to play a three-game intra-divisional series against the Blue Jays, with Game 1 scheduled for Monday.
