The Athletics have been on a spree with a flurry of extensions on the roll and the next man to get a deal could be Shea Langeliers. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds could bring back a familiar face.
Let’s learn more about these rumors.
A’s Target Shea Langeliers Extension
The Athletics might not be over with their extension spree. Over the last few years, the franchise has inked several of its young and talented players to long-term deals. Extensions have been signed with outfielder Lawrence Butler (seven years, $65.5 million), shortstop Jacob Wilson (seven years, $70 million), outfielder Tyler Soderstrom (seven years, $86 million) and designated hitter Brent Rooker (five years, $60 million).
The two names who are being rumored to get an extension are Nick Kurtz and catcher Shea Langeliers.
However, with the 28-year old, things won’t be easy for the Athletics. He’s slated to earn around $25-30 million over his next three arbitration years before turning a free agent in the 2028-29 offseason. Moreover, Langeliers is a client of Scott Boras, who is not known to fall for extensions.
After being acquired from the Atlanta Braves, Langeliers had a breakout season last year, slashing .277/.325/.536 (132 wRC+) with a career-high 31 homers. The year before, he hit 29 home runs, so his power is another reason for the Athletics.
Reds Plot Blockbuster Reunion With $108,000,000 All-Star
The Reds have made it clear that they want to improve, having signed Eugenio Suarez. Their next potential step could be to bring back Luis Castillo, who is currently with the Seattle Mariners.
The right-hander signed a five-year, $108 million contract extension with the Mariners in September 2022. The contract runs through 2027 with a $21.6 million average annual value.
In order to strike a trade, the Mariners might ask for three young Reds pitchers: Rhett Lowder, Chase Burns, and Connor Phillips.
Lowder has good command, Burns has great strikeout ability, and Phillips gives them flexibility. All three pitchers have components that could compel the Mariners to make this trade happen. As for the Reds, all three of these pitchers are not part of their major league roster yet and they’ll also be helped with the Mariners taking ownership of some part of Castillo’s salary.
