Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper broke his silence on his controversial video on Cameo for a fan suffering from a gambling addiction. The video showed Harper wishing the fan a happy Thanksgiving, with the FanDuel logo also displayed.
At the time, it looked like Harper was associated with the sportsbook. However, the Phillies star made it clear that it was not the case.
On Monday, Harper released a statement through his Instagram stories, sharing he has no affiliations with FanDuel whatsoever. Harper also revealed that he did not know the true purpose behind this video. He received it through Cameo as what appeared to be a personal request from someone identifying themselves only as “Bryttanni” for a “holiday video for Terry.”
“I joined Cameo to engage with fans through paid personalized videos,” Harper said. “What happened here went beyond anything I knew about or approved. In November 2024, someone identifying themselves only as “Bryttanni” submitted an order through Cameo for a personal “holiday video for Terry.” Cameo had a separate category for business video requests, and at the time I did not know this video would be used for commercial purposes.”
Harper also shared that he didn’t consent to FanDuel adding their own logo and using it for gambling purposes.
“The request included a short script,” Harper continued. “I read it in good faith. FanDuel then put its own logo on the video and used it as a gambling promotion. I did not know FanDuel would do this, I did not consent to it, and FanDuel had no right to do it.
“Had I known FanDuel’s true intent, I would not have made the video. The same is true had I known anything about Terry or his situation, or about any alleged “partnership” between Cameo and FanDuel.”
Harper also pushed back on The Philadelphia Inquirer’s claim, which reported the video in the first place.
“Contrary to the Inquirer’s suggestion, I did not know the Cameo video would be used for a FanDuel VIP promotion, and I have no affiliation with FanDuel whatsoever,” Harper added. “Counsel has directed me not to comment any further at this time.”
Root Cause Behind Bryce Harper’s Controversial Video For FanDuel Customer
Earlier this month, The Philadelphia Inquirer investigated Terry Thompson, who had wagered roughly $18.5 million with FanDuel, reportedly losing around $1.5-2 million. Several sportsbook platforms, including FanDuel, provided Thompson with perks such as Super Bowl tickets, champagne, and Bryce Harper’s personalized video.
In the video, Harper said:
“Hey Terry, Your host Bryttanni from FanDuel wanted to make sure your Thanksgiving was extra special so I just wanted to hop on and wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving. Tell Max (son) I said hello.”
Thompson has since sued FanDuel and DraftKings, claiming that their VIP treatment encouraged his gambling addiction. In the meantime, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the video and how it was used.
