World Baseball Classic Today: Ethan Holliday Suits Up Under Father Matt Holliday for Rockies vs. Team USA; Alex Bregman Homers on Back-to-Back Days

The Holliday family will come together for the exhibition match between the Colorado Rockies and Team USA ahead of the World Baseball Classic. Meanwhile, Team USA third baseman Alex Bregman seems to be in good touch after his pair of home runs.

Let’s learn more about these updates.

Ethan Holliday Suits Up Under Father Matt Holliday for Rockies

Ethan Holliday is the son of former World Series champion and St. Louis Cardinals legend Matt Holliday. Ethan was drafted in the first round by the Rockies last year. The Rockies prospect was announced one among 12 prospects tasked with providing depth to Team USA, whose hitting coach is Holliday Sr. The exhibition game will take place on Wednesday.

After being drafted fourth overall, Ethan played at Single-A Fresno last season, hitting .239/.357/.380 with two home runs.

Ethan’s father Matt has close ties with the Rockies since this is the team where he enjoyed his initial part of his career. The Rockies drafted him in the 1998 MLB draft and he went on to make his debut in 2004. He stayed at Coors Field till 2008 before being traded to the Oakland Athletics in Nov. 2008.

Holliday Sr. returned to the Rockies in 2018, which was his final year in the majors. After batting .283/.415/.434 in 53 plate appearances that season, Holliday retired. Now he expects his two sons to take his legacy forward. While Ethan is just starting, his elder brother Jackson Holliday, who was drafted first overall in the 2022 MLB draft, have already made his debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024 and had a great year last season.

Alex Bregman Homers on Back-to-Back Days

After opting out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox and signing with the Chicago Cubs on a five-year, $175 million deal, Alex Bregman is turning up the notch as he prepares to represent Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

Bregman launched a two-run homer in the fifth inning during a Team USA exhibition game against the Rockies. The shot gave Team USA a lead and it was his second straight home run in as many days.

Bregman’s Team USA also includes top MLB stars like Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper. The 2026 World Baseball Classic will be held from March 5 to March 17 with games in cities like Houston, Miami, San Juan, and Tokyo.
