Alabama QB Ty Simpson Opens Up on Why He Rejected $6.5 Million to Enter NFL Draft

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson generated buzz after he declared for the 2026 NFL draft verbally. Simpson led Alabama to the College Football Playoff, where they suffered a 38-3 blowout loss against Indiana in a Rose Bowl game.

As soon as Simpson declared for the draft, other teams took it as a cue that he might be just leaving Crimson. So, they rushed with offers ranging from $4 million to $6.5 million to get him to transfer. Miami, Ole Miss, and Tennessee were the three programs that Simpson confirmed had given him offers.

A few weeks after he declined those offers and reaffirmed his decision to stay in the draft, Simpson shared why he “absolutely” remains content about his decision.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the last jersey I wanted to wear in college was the Alabama Crimson Tide jersey,” Simpson told AL.com on Wednesday. “I came there. I stayed there. The last thing I wanted to do was tarnish my legacy and go somewhere else where I didn’t go out of high school and I didn’t want to play. I love coach DeBoer, I love the University of Alabama. I love the fans. I love everything about it. Hopefully, in the draft, whenever my name is written on a card, they will write ‘University of Alabama’ on it. It’s going to give me great pride.”

Simpson also shared about the privileged moment he will get to share at the captain’s ceremony at Denny Chimes.

“How many people can say they were going to put their hand in Denny Chimes and foot in Denny Chimes and then go play somewhere else?” Simpson said. “It wouldn’t have felt right to me. I’m going to make sure when I do it, I’m going to try not to get emotional because I’ve been waiting so long for it. It means a lot to me to be able to show my kids when they’re older to come back and say their dad played here and was a captain.”

It seems Simpson built quite a bond with the Alabama program and the coaches. In 2025, as Alabama’s starting quarterback, Simpson completed 305 of 473 passes for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Money Matters Least To Ty Simpson

Ty Simpson waited four years to get the starting quarterback opportunity with Alabama. He could have gone to another program and earned more than what he earned at Alabama. But for him, money was not going to be the reason for him to leave Alabama.

“I know people always say it’s not about the money, and I could have made way more money somewhere else, but I was happy at Alabama and wanted to stand on what I built there. That’s the way I wanted to go out,” Simpson said.

Next up for Simpson is to prepare for the 2026 NFL draft. He hopes to prove himself at the NFL Combine and any postseason bowl games.
