University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel’s job might be in danger. He’s served in this position for the last 10 years following his hiring as the 12th director of athletics back in 2016.
On Sunday, sports journalist John U. Bacon shared a post regarding Manuel’s future with Michigan. According to him, the University might part ways with him as the investigation continues into the scandal involving former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore.
However, Bacon also noted that the University reportedly plans to buy out Manuel’s contract, which might end up financially benefiting him.
“Other sources have reported what I have waited for my sources to confirm: Michigan is preparing a buy-out for AD Warde Mauel, which is expected to accept,” Bacon tweeted. “Some version of the investigation UM commissioned into the department is likely to be released by the end of the week.”
Manuel signed a five-year extension with the University of Michigan in 2024. According to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, a buyout would require 36 months of severance pay, which could amount to a staggering $6 million.
“Manuel signed a five-year extension in 2024 through June 2030 at more than $2 million a year,” Dellenger wrote. “A buyout provision in his contract requires a severance of 36 months of pay unless the school and Manuel reach a settlement agreement. An announcement could come as soon as this week.”
Moore replaced Jim Harbaugh as the Wolverines’ head coach following their 2023 undefeated national championship campaign. However, back in December, he was fired for reportedly being in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
He was then arrested and booked at the Washtenaw County Jail for alleged assault and felony home invasion. In April, he was sentenced to 18 months in jail and was fined around $1,000.
CFB analyst shares his thoughts on Warde Manuel’s uncertain future with Michigan
On Sunday, CFB analyst Brad Powers did not mince his words while discussing Warde Manuel’s future with Michigan.
According to him, the athletic director should have been fired instead of reportedly getting a buyout.
“Warde Manuel should be fired but he’ll get a nice big ‘buy-out’ instead because he knows where all the bodies are buried,” Powers tweeted. “I’d love to have Michigan’s titles in FB/Hoops but there’s no doubt this was the most crooked athletics department the last 5 years.”
Last season, the Wolverines failed to make the 12-team playoffs. They finished with a 9-4 (7-2 Big Ten) record.
