‘So Screwed’: Fans React As Judge Phillip Hays Recuse Himself From Brendan Sorsby vs NCAA Lawsuit

Brendan Sorsby’s lawsuit against the NCAA, in which he is seeking eligibility to play in the 2026 college football season amid his gambling addiction controversy.

The NCAA is currently investigation Sorsby for potentially gambling on an Indiana game in 2022, during which he was redshirting with the program.

In his lawsuit, Sorsby has offered to take a 2 game suspension and said he is willing to team up with NCAA to spread awareness about gambling addiction, claiming that he has the disorder where he feels compelled to gamble.

After the news of Sorsby’s lawsuit broke, many fans and analysts raised concern over the fact that the judge in this case is a Texas Tech alum.

On Wednesday, Judge Philip Hays announced that he is recusing himself from the case.

“Literally nobody knows how to deal with this stuff. Everyone is scared to get involved, it’s the problem with the NCAA right now, nobody knows what to do.” one fan reacted.

“I mean the case against Sorsby is as bad as it gets AND he admits it on record. Not sure what leg he has to stand on in a courtroom. 😂” another fan pointed out.

“That’s how it should have went for everybody you shouldn’t get a leg up cus the judge or have the judge at all if they have a connection to your school.” Another fan highlighted.

“Another twist in the NCAA legal saga 👀Recusal usually means conflict concerns or pressure behind the scenes—this case keeps getting more complex by the day. If this gets reassigned, it could quietly shift the entire direction of Sorsby vs. NCAA.” Another fan said.

“Sorsby is so screwed. He’s about to get life in prison 😂” another fan commented.

“Good for him and smart. It was a lose-lose situation for him.” another fan added.

Analyst Gives Brendan Sorsby a Benefit of the Doubt Amid Gambling Addiction Story

The Athletic’s Jason Kirk spoke about Brendan Sorsby’s gambling situation after the Texas Tech star filed a lawsuit against NCAA, seeking a speedy resolution so he could play in the 2026 season.

Kirk pointed out that the situation Sorsby is under investigation for right now took place when he was 18 and added that the Texas Tech star was acting his age, around friends who weren’t much older than him.

The analyst also shared his own experience and said he has done far dumber things that garnered far less publicity, hence making the statement that he understands Sorsby’s side too.

“Honestly, betting on pre-Cignetti Indiana football is even weirder than the Turkish basketball and Romanian soccer bets Sorsby also got up to.” Kirk added.

Sorsby was among the most hyped up players heading into the 2026 season.
