UConn Huskies star Azzi Fudd might be the next big thing in women’s basketball, possibly following in the footsteps of fellow former Huskies star Paige Bueckers and Indiana Fever superstar guard Caitlin Clark.
Fudd, who is currently busy in the NCAA Tournament, will declare for the WNBA draft when the college basketball season is over. A former UConn star and WNBA legend, Diana Taurasi, put her on a high pedestal while predicting that the Dallas Wings would pick her first overall in the WNBA draft.
“I think AZ’s the best pure shooter I’ve ever seen. She’s one of the only players I’ve seen that when she catches the ball and gets ready to shoot, I never think she’s going to miss,” Taurasi said.
With this remark, Taurasi might have suggested that Fudd’s shooting is superior to the likes of Bueckers and even Clark. The three-time WNBA champion also talked about how Fudd has worked on her defense, and it is showing this season.
“And I think this year, not only with that amazing skill, I think this year she’s taken a step forward in so many other areas in playmaking, decision making. She’s a great defender. You always put on the other team’s best guard,” Taurasi continued.
Taurasi also talked about the leadership qualities of Fudd, as he has taken the charge to lead UConn this season.
“And not only that, there’s little things when I watch the games this year,” Taurasi added. “Every huddle, she’s the one talking. She’s taken the next level in being a leader of a team, being able to make sure everyone’s in the right place. And as a senior, that’s all you want. And, you know, she’ll definitely be the number one pick. There’s not many players like her to wear the UConn jersey. She’s going to be great in Dallas.”
Azzi Fudd Adds To Her Draft Stock After Elite Performance vs Syracuse
Azzi Fudd led from the front against Syracuse and took UConn to its 32nd Sweet Sixteen. Her 34-point outburst came in handy for the Huskies, who defeated the Orange 98-45.
It was a career-high performance by Fudd in terms of scoring and also add to the fact that she made eight 3-pointers for the first time in a single college basketball game. With this, she played her last game in Storrs with a stellar outing.
“Tonight was really special,” Fudd said on the ESPN broadcast. “It wasn’t about me; it was about this team. We played really good team basketball tonight. The crowd was incredible, as it is every night. To have one last night here to soak this in, embrace it, was amazing.”
Fudd’s latest performance adds to her draft stock as she is among the contenders to be picked first overall in the WNBA draft. She’ll face challenge from other contenders, including TCU point guard Olivia Miles, UCLA center Lauren Betts and Spanish prospect Awa Fam.
