Ta’Niya Latson was a consensus five-star recruit following her senior season with American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida. She held multiple offers from Baylor, Georgia, Kentucky, Miami (Florida), NC State, Texas and Virginia Tech but picked Florida State to begin her college career in 2022.
With the Seminoles, Latson played three seasons and reached the NCAA Tournament in each season. However, something was missing for Latson with the ACC program. In all those three seasons, never once did Florida State look like a contender for the ACC Tournament.
She averaged 21.3 points in her freshman year to become the Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year. She led the nation in scoring last season with 25.2 points per game. Moreover,
Her thirst for landing a championship led her to enter the transfer portal in March 2025. The following month, she officially transferred to the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team.
The move united her with Raven Johnson, who was her teammate at Westlake, where the duo led the team to its first GEICO Nationals title in their junior season.
Ahead of the Final Four matchup, Latson reaffirmed her decision to transfer to Dawn Staley’s squad.
“I’m just blessed. This is something I came here for, to play in big games, big moments like this,” Latson said Thursday. “Obviously I’m a little starstruck, but I’m ready to go out there and compete. This is what I came here for. My mindset is already on playing on Friday.”
Ta’Niya Latson’s Decision to Transfer to South Carolina Paying Dividend
The decision to move to South Carolina has proved correct for Ta’Niya Latson as she is heading to the national championship game after the Gamecocks defeated the UConn Huskies in the Final Four.
In the semifinals’ 62-48 win, Latson scored 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and assisted on two field goals in 30 mins.
Latson might not be producing the same production she used to give with Florida State but she is playing for the team with elite talent. Latson, who is averaging 14.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists this season, is in for something much bigger than herself.
The three-time All-ACC selection will get her first and final shot at the national championship with the title date set against UCLA, which defeated Texas in the other semifinal. Latson hopes to call herself a national champion before she leaves college basketball.
