Teary-Eyed Azzi Fudd Struggles to Find Words to Reflect on UConn’s Final Four Loss vs South Carolina

Tears started rolling out of UConn Huskies guard Azzi Fudd’s eyes even before she could say anything to reporters during her press conference after the 62-48 loss against the South Carolina Gamecocks. This marks the end of Fudd’s career in Storrs and she takes back loads of memories with her.

Fudd was asked what it was like to hear the final buzzer and the completion of her college career with UConn. She shared her gratitude towards coaches, players and the program.

“Yeah, a lot of emotions. I mean, obviously, this isn’t how I wanted my career at UConn to end, but these five years, I have so much to be grateful for. I couldn’t have asked for better teammates, better coaches, a better experience,” Fudd said.

Fudd was not great on Saturday. She could only convert 3 of 15 shots from the field, including going 2-for-9 from the 3-point line. Even UConn’s other key scorer, Sarah Strong, struggled on the night, shooting 4-16 for 12 points.

In the press conference, Fudd felt she let the team down. But Fudd also mentions that this loss doesn’t define what the team did to make a deep run in March Madness.

“I’ll look back on college and I know something we’ve talked about is how, you know, this game, like I said, not how we wanted to end, but it doesn’t define us and, you know, what this team is, what the season was for us,” Fudd added.

“So I think, you know, guilty. I feel like I let the team down today, but a lot of gratitude, a lot of love, and just a lot that I’ll never be able to, you know, verbalize and thank the coaching staff, the teammates, the support staff, and everyone from this program that supported me, touched me. I’ll never be able to really verbalize how much they meant to me.”

Ashlynn Shade Feels Sorry For Azzi Fudd After Heartbreaking UConn Loss

Azzi Fudd was one of the many South Carolina stars who got teary-eyed in the aftermath of a heartbreaking Final Four loss. Fellow senior Ashlynn Shade, who was one of the Gamecocks ‘ stars who did well shooting-wise (10 points on 5-11 shooting), broke down in tears while feeling sorry for Fudd on ending their careers on a disappointing note.

“What’s hitting me the most is that I won’t get to play with Azzi anymore, I won’t get to be with Caroline anymore, and I really wanted to do this for them,” Shade said. “Because no one wants to leave their senior year on this note, but it’s just the thought that it won’t happen anymore.”

Fudd, Shade and other South Carolina seniors will now look forward to start their professional careers with the WNBA draft approaching.
