Geno Auriemma has been the head coach of the UConn Huskies since 1985. In a career spanning over 40 years as a head coach, Auriemma has worked with countless great basketball players.
Some of his players went on to become the all-time greats of the game, some are still dominating at the highest level, and some followed in his footsteps and became coaches themselves. Shea Ralph fits in the last category.
Ralph represented the UConn Huskies from 1996 to 2001. She won the NCAA title in 2000 and was the NCAA Tournament MOP the same year. In 2021, Ralph became the head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores.
This year, she made her third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Her team reached the Sweet 16 and lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. But the impact made by Ralph was undeniable. Ralph won the AP Women’s basketball Coach of the Year.
After winning the award, Ralph thanked everyone who had played a role in her journey. Toward the end of the press conference, she recalled being called “uncoachable” by Coach Geno during her time with the Huskies.
“Yesterday, I went and gave coach a hug, and I just wanted to say thank you,” Ralph said. “And he reminded me that it was really ironic that I’m the most uncoachable player that he ever had and somehow ended up with this award.”
Coach Geno has had a special relationship with the players that he has coached. Needless to say, he didn’t mean to insult her with the comment. Ralph also took it in the right spirit, and she laughed while retelling the encounter with her former coach.
Geno Auriemma Compared His Experience with Paige Bueckers and Diana Taurasi
During a press conference ahead of the Sweet 16 matchup, Geno Auriemma said that he had dinner with Paige Bueckers the night before, and it made him realize what it was like to coach her.
“We had dinner with Paige last night, and listening to her speak, it reminded me of how much those five years took off of my life, listening to the things that she says. And the interesting thing is, I lived through it with Diana. They’re the only two that put me through that,” he said.
Taurasi played for UConn from 2000 to 2004 and three-peated the NCAA title from 2002 to 2004. Bueckers was a part of his program from 2020 to 2025, and she won the NCAA title in her final year.
