Vic Schaefer’s Texas Longhorns have reached the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. Schaefer joined the program in 2020 and has had a successful run so far, making the Elite Eight three times so far.
This season is slightly more emotional for Schaefer, as this is the last time that point guard Rori Harmon will play for the program. A former five-star recruit, Harmon joined the Texas Longhorns in 2021.
Last Sunday, Harmon played her last game in front of the home crowd at Moody Center in Austin. The Longhorns put up a clinical performance and registered a blowout 100-58 win over the Oregon Ducks in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
After the game, Schaefer got emotional talking about Harmon in front of thousands of fans.
“For five years I’ve come to the office, and every day I’ve seen Rori Harmon,” he said. “There’s not enough time out here today to talk about it. You just gotta know how special it’s been.”
The crowd chanted her name and gave her a farewell that she will remember for a long time. During her time with the Texas Longhorns, Harmon has won several individual awards, but she has yet to win the NCAA title.
The Longhorns have been great so far this season. They won the SEC Tournament title by defeating the South Carolina Gamecocks 78-61. The Longhorns are one of the favorites to win the NCAA title this year.
Apart from Harmon being a great player and the team leader, her relationship with the head coach is strong because they joined the program in a one-year span. Harmon has been the core of the team throughout his tenure.
Vic Schaefer Knew Rori Harmon Would Be the Team’s Future
Schaefer had a vision for Harmon when he decided to recruit her. He knew that she would be the one who would lead the team in the future, and she had the qualities that he wanted in her star player.
He made it clear from the beginning that it was Harmon’s program and team. Even she was a little confused by that call.
“I was an 18-year-old and all my teammates are like 22, 23, and you want me to be responsible for them?” she said. “I just got here. I don’t even know what I’m doing, and you want me to check other people and what they’re doing? That was just accepting that and understanding the role that he wanted the point guards in.”
Recruiting Harmon turned out to be one of the best decisions Schaefer made, and he has witnessed her growth as an individual and a team player.
