UConn’s Ashlynn Shade Breaks Down in Tears After Heartbreaking Loss vs South Carolina

It’s over for senior Ashlynn Shade and the UConn Huskies after the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated them 62-48 in the Final Four game on Saturday.

The controversial game, which had all the drama involved, saw Shade score 10 points on 5-11 shooting, including 0-3 from the 3-point line. In 33 minutes of action, she also had four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

After the game, Shade broke down in tears seeing her college basketball career end on a disappointing note. She was also disappointed for Fudd, who is also departing UConn for the WNBA draft after this season.

“What’s hitting me the most is that I won’t get to play with Azzi anymore, I won’t get to be with Caroline anymore, and I really wanted to do this for them,” Shade said. “Because no one wants to leave their senior year on this note, but it’s just the thought that it won’t happen anymore.”

Shade’s South Carolina suffered from nightmarish shooting from their two key scorers. Fudd shot just 3-of-15 to score eight points, including 2-9 from the 3-point line. Moreover, Sarah Strong finished with 12 points on 4-16 shooting, including 2-5 from beyond the arc.

Azzi Fudd Called Ashlynn Shade “Glue” of UConn

In the NCAA Tournament first-round game, Ashlynn Shade became the 54th player in the Huskies’ history to surpass 1,000 career points. She’s third on the roster to breach the milestone after Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong.

Shade has always come up strong whenever the Huskies have needed her. Fudd perfectly describes her role on the team.

“I think the most impressive thing is just her confidence and her even-keeledness. You see her calm, cool, collected self every single game,” Fudd said. “I feel like she’s that glue of our team that doesn’t get talked about enough. What she does gets overlooked, because it’s not always in the stats. It’s the screens she sets, she’s a great ball-handler, a great passer, so I’m super proud of her, and to see her score 1,000 her was special.”

Shade and Fudd have both played their final season with UConn and they now look ahead in their professional careers.
