South Carolina Gamecocks’ head coach Dawn Staley has been on a fitness run. It’s Day 14 of her trying to get healthy and stick to her new diet. However, temptations may creep in. Sometimes, even the most resilient of human beings can give in to cravings, and Staley is no different.
In a post highlighting her “sensible dinner” for the day on Instagram, Staley wrote in the caption:
“Day 14!! Smoothies and sensible dinner. Am I hungry = yes. Do I want candy = yes. Do I want coffee = double yes! 🤣 Do I want to snack = h e dbl hockey sticks yeah🤣 BUT I don’t. Stay committed yall! Prep is where it’s at. @diannelpalmer couldn’t do it without you! 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾.”
Staley follows a pescatarian diet, which she recently adopted. It includes smoothies for breakfast and lunch, while for dinner, she has rice and salmon. This dietary choice is influenced by a desire to manage her health, particularly to reduce inflammation and stress related to her experience with pericarditis.
Staley fervently identifies as a pescatarian. For her New Year’s resolution, she committed to a stricter, temporary regimen, focused on simplicity and consistency. She noted that stress and an unhealthy lifestyle, coupled with poor food choices, contributed to flare-ups. Hence, managing her diet and prioritizing movement are Staley’s current tools to stay fit.
Staley emphasizes consistency and meal preparation to stick to her plan. She acknowledges the challenges of avoiding snacks or coffee, but staying committed to her health goals is paramount, aside from chasing a National Championship with the Gamecocks.
How Dawn Staley Fixed a Looming Problem in South Carolina’s Roster
An uncharacteristic lack of depth has defined the Gamecocks this season, especially after Chloe Kitts’ season-ending injury and Ta’Niya Latson’s recent ankle injury. This roster thinness forced Staley to overwork her starting five, with key players regularly logging 30 minutes per game.
However, Latson’s injury inadvertently revealed a solution in freshman guard Agot Makeer. Staley has explicitly acknowledged the need to reduce the starters’ workload and now views Makeer as a proven entity capable of shouldering significant minutes.
While Makeer’s early progress was hindered by a concussion, she recently logged over 20 minutes in three consecutive games. Staley’s trust in the freshman has seemingly solidified just when the schedule demands it the most. For the Gamecocks to succeed against elite competition, Makeer and reserves Maddy McDaniel and Ayla McDowell must provide the reliable bench support the team has lacked all season.
