Sarah Strong’s New Strategy Receives Geno Auriemma’s Backing But Not Without “Sucker” Claim

UConn Huskies forward Sarah Strong has been connecting well from beyond the arc and that’s what head coach Geno Auriemma wanted all along. In the latest 84-48 win against the Seton Hall Pirates, Strong posted 18 points, shooting 7-11 from the floor, including 3-4 from the 3-point line. She also had eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block.

After the game, the Huskies coach basically said that over the last few games, Strong has stopped overthinking and started taking the good shots that are already there, rather than passing them up in search of a “perfect” one. In the remarks, Auriemma called Strong a “sucker” for assuming that if she misses from behind the line, the team will be hurt.

“The last three games specifically, I think she’s had a lot of opportunities, and she’s taken advantage of them,” Auriemma said. “She’s really being aggressive, aggressively hunting down those shots. Whereas there were times in the games where she would constantly be looking to get a better shot, which I’m thinking, that’s a pretty good shot right now that we have. And I just think she’s taking more advantage of it. And you can see it in practice too.

“When they start going in for her, they all go in, and she can’t wait to shoot the next one.
She’s just got to get rid of that if I miss, I’m hurting my team mentality, which is, no, if you pass it, you’re hurting our team the last three games. Sucker.”

    Sarah Strong’s 3-PT Shooting Improving

Sarah Strong started the season strong, scoring over 20 points in three of the first four games. During that time, her 3-point shooting was ordinary, converting only five of 15 shots attempted.

In December, she converted just 11 of 26 shots from the 3-point shooting line. However, there were a few games where she went 1-4 from beyond the arc. Because of this, she started taking fewer shots.

The result we can see in January already. In the last two games, Strong has taken 11 shots and converted eight of them. If she continues like this, the Huskies can outplay any opponent with ease.
