Raven Johnson and the South Carolina Gamecocks are playing the TCU Horned Frogs in the Elite Eight matchup today. The winner here will qualify for the Final Four and get a step closer to possibly lifting the national title.
Johnson has had a good season so far, not just as a player but as a leader, too. She is chasing her third NCAA title with the Gamecocks in the final year of her college career. Johnson is slated to be a top draft pick this year.
She is widely projected as a first-round pick and is among the top three guards this year. Johnson is a potential top 10 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
During a recent conversation with Darien Rencher on the ‘I Am Athlete’ podcast, Johnson said that women’s basketball is more skilled than men’s basketball. The statement might be controversial, but Johnson said that it’s her opinion.
When asked if there’s something that she would want to tell people about women’s basketball, Johnson said that there’s no difference as far as preparation and the process is concerned.
“I feel like we put our blood, sweat, and tears just like the men put their blood, sweat, and tears into their sport. I think people are respecting us how they should respect us,” she said.
Women’s basketball has seen astronomical growth over the last few years. Although there are still some issues that need to be resolved, there hasn’t been a better time to be a female basketball player.
“I think women’s basketball is more skilled than men’s basketball, I think so,” she said.
As per Johnson, the NBA is more like a one-man show, whereas in women’s basketball, five players on one side compete against the five players on the other side. She made it clear that it was just her opinion based on how she understands the game.
Dawn Staley Wore Raven Johnson’s Face on her Shirt
South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley showed up for the game against the Oklahoma Sooners wearing a Gucci jacket over a t-shirt that featured Raven Johnson’s face. That look immediately became a fan favorite.
When Johnson was asked about Staley’s shirt and how she felt seeing her face on it, Johnson said she was very happy.
“I see my beautiful self,” she said. “I’m happy she’s wearing my shirt. I mean, she has a beautiful person on her chest.”
The Gamecocks defeated Oklahoma 94-68 to proceed to the Elite Eight, where they’re playing TCU today.
