The UConn Huskies are once again having a tremendous season. They are 22-0 overall. Geno Auriemma is leading an inspired group of individuals who have once again shown that they are probably the best team in women’s college basketball. Paige Bueckers led UConn to their 12th national championship last season in her fifth year as a college athlete.
Both Bueckers and Azzi Fudd had struggled with multiple injuries throughout their college careers. Last season was the first year that they both played maximum games together, and they made sure to make it count. UConn won the NCAA title, and Bueckers was drafted as the first overall pick by the Dallas Wings. She also ended up winning the Rookie of the Year award.
Another important piece of their team, Kaitlyn Chen, also graduated and got picked by the Golden State Valkyries. Everyone thought the UConn Huskies would surely miss both Bueckers and Chen. However, Auriemma’s team is going strong without them.
Let alone miss Paige Bueckers, an argument can be made that they are even better than last season, just because of the dominance with which they are playing at the moment. Sarah Strong is leading in four stats. She is averaging 19.1 points, 8 rebounds, 3.5 steals, and 1.6 blocks. Azzi Fudd and KK Arnold are also having a brilliant run.
So when Bueckers was asked about UConn’s dominant season so far, she had a hilarious response. A reporter asked which UConn team was better, this year or last year. Paige answered:
“I’m gonna say this year or last year’s team. But the dominance that they have shown this year is insane, it’s crazy. It’s funny ’cause me and Kaitlyn had a conversation like, ‘Do they even miss us? Was our presence even felt?’ It was crazy just to see how dominant they are this year. But I’m definitely gonna have to go last year.”
