UConn remains on top. The women’s college basketball regular season is about to end, with most teams having just two games left. The final regular-season rankings will be important as schools prepare for their conference tournaments and, eventually, the NCAA Tournament in March.
While the AP Poll Top 25 is yet to be released, journalist Talia Goodman of On 3 has her own prediction for how the list will look as we enter the last week of regular-season action.
Here’s Goodman’s top 25:
- UConn Huskies – Big East
- UCLA Bruins – Big Ten
- South Carolina Gamecocks – SEC
- Texas Longhorns – SEC
- Vanderbilt Commodores – SEC
- LSU Tigers – SEC
- Oklahoma Sooners – SEC
- Louisville Cardinals – ACC
- Michigan Wolverines – Big Ten
- Iowa Hawkeyes – Big Ten
- Ohio State Buckeyes – Big Ten
- TCU Horned Frogs – Big 12
- Duke Blue Devils – ACC
- Maryland Terrapins – Big Ten
- Kentucky Wildcats – SEC
- Michigan State Spartans – Big Ten
- Ole Miss Rebels – SEC
- Minnesota Golden Gophers – Big 12
- West Virginia Mountaineers – Big 12
- Texas Tech Red Raiders – Big 12
- Georgia Bulldogs – SEC
- Baylor Bears – Big 12
- Alabama Crimson Tide – SEC
- North Carolina Tar Heels – ACC
- Tennessee Volunteers – SEC
The SEC leads the list with the most teams in it, with 10. The Big Ten is second, with six, and the Big 12 brings five programs to the mix.
Holly Rowe Believes That Geno Auriemma And The UConn Make Women’s College Basketball Better
The Huskies of Geno Auriemma are closing in on a perfect regular season, having a 29-0 record with two games left against Georgetown and St John’s this week. Some have said that UConn’s dominance over the competition is detractive to the sport as a whole.
Not ESPN’s Holly Rowe. The network’s premier sideline reporter recently stated that she believes the way Auriemma’s Huskies have been performing makes the sport all the more competitive.
“There used to be this conversation that UConn is bad for women’s basketball because they’re just killing everyone. They were on a 111-game winning streak,” Rowe said. “People thought that was a negative thing, and I always have thought the opposite. UConn’s dominance for so long forced other programs to raise their level of excellence.”
And one can make an argument that yes, in the short term, it makes the sport less interesting to have a team be so dominant. However, in the long run, it will probably force everyone else to improve their level.
