Tennessee Lady Volunteers coach Kim Caldwell is receiving flak for the sudden departure of one of her star players, Kaiya Wynn. Wynn announced on Tuesday that she is stepping away from the Lady Volunteers program, and quite possibly college basketball as a whole.
In a letter posted on X, Wynn indicated that, despite her love for the Tennessee-based program, a huge factor behind her decision was to start in her final regular-season game in the 2025-26 campaign. However, Caldwell opted not to start Wynn during the Lady Volunteers’ senior night game against the Vanderbilt Commodores. She did not play in the game at all.
Fans online called out Caldwell for her handling of Wynn throughout her time with the program, especially in her last year.
“I tried giving coach Caldwell the benefit of the doubt but this Kaiya Wynn stuff has really pi**ed me off! This is not a good look, she is the ONLY senior that’s been a Lady Vol since DAY ONE! She deserved better,” one fan explained.
“People want to say that she was trying to win and starting the best players, but everyone in their arena, and for the in the state of Tennessee knew that they were going to beat us by minimum of 10 points so why not start her for three minutes?” another fan said.
“Even if she was trying to win, she could’ve started her…Played her for 2 minutes then taken her out… Maybe let her stay in a couple more mins if the team started well…But coach has DEFINITELY got to have more consideration than that,” another user shared.
“Whoever keeps pushing that narrative that she declined to go in needs to stop. Kaiya is a stand-up person on and off the court. I believe whatever she says. Kim subs 1 minute into the game. No excuse why she couldn’t give Wynn one start for her last home game,” a fan wrote.
“Kaiya Wynn deserved better,” one fan claimed.
“Sorry that it ended the way it did but thank you for sticking around to the end. I felt like something was off with this team pretty much all season. Best of luck to you in the future,” another fan posted.
“We love you, and you deserved better. Go be great Kaiya 🧡,” a fan exclaimed.
Wynn’s departure comes as the Lady Volunteers prepare for their postseason run, starting with the second round of the 2026 SEC tournament on Thursday. The Lady Volunteers finished their regular season campaign with an overall record of 16-12 (8-8 SEC).
Kaiya Wynn Says Not Starting In Her Final Home Game Was The Breaking Point For Her Departure
In an emotional letter on social media explaining her sudden departure from the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, Kaiya Wynn revealed that she decided to leave when she did not start the final home game.
She added that there are other reasons for her decision as well.
“As someone who has never started a career game, I was hoping to start in my last appearance in Thompson-Boling. That obviously did not happen, and to be asked to check into the game with 15 seconds left while losing was not how I wanted to spend my final moments in my arena after five years. Although that was not the sole reason, it was the breaking point for me,” Wynn wrote.
