Newly signed guard Jerzy Robinson has shared her thoughts about joining a powerhouse program, the South Carolina Gamecocks, coached by Dawn Staley. In December of last year, Robinson announced her commitment to coach Staley’s Gamecocks when she enters college basketball in the 2026-27 campaign. She recently signed with the team.
On Monday, March 30, @overtimewbb posted a clip on Instagram from Robinson’s recent press conference at the annual McDonald’s All-American Game for Girls. Robinson was asked about the conversations that led to her decision. The 17-year-old said the major factor for her decision stemmed from her and coach Staley setting goals early on.
“My visit was amazing. It was way better than I could have imagined. But I think super importantly was authenticity between me and Dawn. I told her my goals. She said, which is something I remember. She said, ‘I’m only gonna add to you, I’m not gonna take away.’ And so, that was super big for me, you know, when picking a college. It’s all about fit. I’m ready to go play for a dog like Dawn Staley,” Robinson said (0:10).

Robinson is wrapping up her senior year of high school hoops at Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles, California. As one of the best guards in the class of 2026, she is presumably looking on towards Staley and the current slew of Gamecocks who are competing in this year’s national tournament. The South Carolina-based program has made it all the way to the Elite Eight.
Faith Was Another Huge Factor That Led To Jerzy Robinson’s Decision For College Basketball
In the same video, Jerzy Robinson discussed how important her faith was when coming up with the decision to join coach Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks in collegiate hoops.
For Robinson, her consistent prayers gave her an understanding of where exactly she wanted to end up.
“I think what led our pre-process recruitment, you know, my faith in the Lord, I asked him. I prayed for discernment, you know, and understanding. I fasted for a little bit just to make that understanding clear,” Robinson shared.
