Geno Auriemma And UConn’s Back-to-Back NCAA Title Hopes Can Be Crushed By Just One Team, As Per Chiney Ogwumike

Geno Auriemma and UConn have been on another level this season. After winning a record 12th national championship in 2025, coach Auriemma has led the Huskies to a ridiculously impressive unbeaten season. They are the only unbeaten team in both men’s and women’s college basketball. They won the Big East tournament championship and ended the regular season with a 20-0 conference and 34-0 overall record.

The Huskies have won many games by a margin of more than 25 points. They have been truly dominant, firing on all cylinders. After Paige Bueckers’ departure to the WNBA last year, fans certainly did not expect to see an improved UConn team. Naturally, Geno dismissed the conversations about Huskies getting better after losing Paige Bueckers.

But their current record tells a story about the tenacity of the team. Of course, it will only be a better season than last if they go on and win another national championship. Many teams can stop the Huskies. But Chiney Ogwumike believes there’s only one team that Geno Auriemma and UConn should be worried about: Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks.

“UConn is the favorite. And in order to potentially take them down, you need four things. One, you need experience. Two you need great game planning and coach. Three, you need to be dominant on both ends of the floor. Four, you need the dawg factor. So give me South Carolina as the team most likely built to do,” Chiney said.

“Because they really improved last year from what we saw in the final four. To now this year. Now, mind you that they lost to Texas in SEC tournament but they have everything when it comes to those recipes to be able to be successful,” she continued.

“Because Joyce Edwards, you’re seeing here right there, went to 12 points per game to 20. You’re seeing Ta’Niya Latson. They won the transfer portal. Ta’Niya Latson, from Florida State, actually led the nation in scoring last year. Now she is tag teaming with her childhood best friend Raven Johnson, on top of having one of the best shooters in the tournament, Tessa,” Chiney added.

“So when I look at those key factors, it looks like Louis Vuitton Dawn and company are honestly built to compete with the best of the best, and right now, the standard has been UConn,” Chiney concluded.

Fans React to Chiney Ogwumike Picking Dawn Staley’s South Carolina as Threat to Geno Auriemma’s UConn

Fans online were in total agreement with Chiney’s analysis.

“I don’t see any team other than them or South Carolina winning it all,” one fan agreed.

“UConn women are straight-up unstoppable! 34-0 with 30 blowouts by 25+? That’s legendary dominance. Go Huskies,” one fan showed support to Geno and company.

“It could happen SC would need to be clicking in March,” one fan predicted.

“I agree, instead of losing by 25+ like last year, SC will lose by 15 instead,” one mocked the Gamecocks.

    “Chiney knows ball,” another agreed.
