Legendary coach Geno Auriemma lauded Connecticut Huskies guard Allie Ziebell’s record-setting performance in the team’s win against the Xavier Musketeers on Wednesday.
Ziebell finished with 34 points, shooting 11-for-15 from the field, including 10-for-14 from 3-point range. She was four long-range shots away from tying Juicy Landrum’s record for most 3-pointers made in a game. She set it in 2019 with 14 3-pointers made.
Speaking to the media after the game, Geno Auriemma had high praise for his guard, who tied UConn’s 3-point record with her outburst.
“The number isn’t as impressive to me as just watching her play with so much confidence … That’s the Allie that I saw in high school.”
While Ziebell missed out on Landrum’s feat, she did pass Maya Moore, breaking her record for most points scored by a reserve in the Huskies’ history. Moore finished with 31 points in 19 minutes against Holy Cross in 2007.
Allie Ziebell is also the first NCAA women’s basketball player to start the game on the bench and finish with 34 or more points with 10 or more 3-pointers made.
Her historic performance will live long in the memory of fans as the Huskies continue their dominant run with a perfect 12-0 record.
Geno Auriemma says confidence held UConn Huskies guard Allie Ziebell back last season
Allie Ziebell’s performance on Wednesday is something fans have been waiting for since her freshman year. Despite being a five-star recruit out of high school, Ziebell had a lackluster freshman season, averaging 2.8 points per game.
Speaking after her 13-point performance in the Huskies’ last preseason game, Auriemma praised the guard’s shooting touch, suggesting that her confidence held her back in 2024-25.
“She’s a really good shooter, smart defensively, and quicker than she looks,” Auriemma said, adding that “last year, it was mostly confidence holding her back. This year, she’s better prepared.”
Allie Ziebell has already made a respectable jump since last season and is averaging 7.5 points per game, shooting 53.3%, including 48.2% from 3-point range. She is even shooting better than star guard Azzi Fudd from long range this season.
Fudd is averaging 16.7 points, shooting 47.7%, including 43.1% from 3-point range on 3.8 attempts per game.
