The UConn Huskies delivered their most dominant performance of the 2024-25 NCAA season on Sunday, overwhelming the South Carolina Gamecocks with an 87-58 victory. With standout performances, especially from Azzi Fudd, the Huskies proved they are a serious contender this season.
This statement win ended South Carolina’s 71-game home winning streak and reinforced UConn’s championship aspirations.

Geno Auriemma Praises Azzi Fudd’s Impact
UConn’s victory was led by Fudd, who had one of her best games of the season. She scored 28 points, including an explosive third quarter where she tallied 18 points. Fudd shot 11-22 from the field, including 6-10 from beyond the arc, while also contributing five rebounds and two assists.
Her scoring surge helped UConn shut down any potential South Carolina comeback attempts.
Fudd’s performance was even more significant given her journey back from a severe knee injury that sidelined her last season. This marked her second consecutive elite performance, as she had previously scored a career-high 34 points against St. John’s on February 12, hitting eight three-pointers in that game.
Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma acknowledged how important this moment was for Fudd during the postgame interview.
“This was a big moment for her … It really goes a long way towards pushing her forward. I’m sure she had some doubts of, do I still have it in me? So I was really proud of her,” Auriemma said, per an X post from Emily Adams of the Hartford Courant.
While Fudd was the star, the entire UConn roster contributed to the win. Sarah Strong had a strong outing with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Paige Bueckers played a well-rounded game with 12 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds.
Their collective efforts helped the Huskies take control of the game early and build a commanding 22-point lead by halftime.
UConn’s Statement Win Ends South Carolina’s Historic Streak
Defending champion South Carolina had been nearly unbeatable at home, with their last loss at Colonial Life Arena dating back to December 3, 2020, against NC State. The 71-game home winning streak ranked as the fourth-longest in Division I women’s basketball history, but UConn ended it decisively.
Joyce Edwards led South Carolina with 17 points, but the Gamecocks struggled to find any offensive rhythm. They were unable to counter UConn’s defensive pressure and outside shooting.
The Huskies knocked down 13 three-pointers in total, with Fudd hitting four of them in the third quarter alone, further distancing her team from South Carolina.

For UConn, this win marked a significant step forward, especially after their loss to Tennessee earlier in the month. Auriemma’s squad appears to be peaking at the right time, and with Fudd healthy and playing at an elite level, they are poised for a deep tournament run.
South Carolina will look to regroup as they finish their three-game homestand against Arkansas on Thursday. Meanwhile, UConn will continue building momentum, knowing they now have the firepower to contend for their first national championship since 2016.
