“I Just Feel Like a Dumba**”: Geno Auriemma Revisits Viral Clash With Dawn Staley

Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley gave us another edition of one of their iconic battles in the Final Four of last season’s NCAA tournament. Unbeaten UConn and an inspired South Carolina met in the Final Four. Dawn Staley’s team got the better of UConn as they won 62-48 and advanced to their second national championship game in a row.

Other than Dawn Staley out-coaching Geno Auriemma, the game went viral for another reason. Towards the end of the game, there was a heated exchange between the two veteran coaches. Geno Auriemma was visibly angry with Dawn while they shook hands. Auriemma reportedly was angry with South Carolina HC for not shaking his hands before the game.

Dawn Staley was visibly upset by the exchange and claimed that she did indeed shake his hands before the game. Staley was livid after the heated row and was seen shouting words for Geno. The matter later died down when Geno Auriemma issued an apology to Dawn Staley, personally as well as publicly. In a recent media availability, Geno revisited the viral moment.

“5 more seconds. I couldn’t keep it in for 5 more seconds. I just feel like a dumba** for the way it played out. We are all human and we all do dumb sh*t,” Geno said.
