Dawn Staley Prepares South Carolina For Intense SEC Tournament

When asked about the team’s mindset leading into the SEC Tournament, South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley made it clear that the Gamecocks were ready.

“Good, ready to rock and roll,” Staley said confidently.

She also acknowledged that she had stressed the importance of playing their best basketball before the tournament even started.

“I think we’re moving towards that. Certain players are certainly playing a lot better—more focused, more impactful on both sides of the basketball. It’s a lot of them, and that makes us feel good about going into the postseason.

“Throughout the season, we’ve had moments where one player played well here, another there. But now, we have a lot of players playing well at the same time, and that’s encouraging,” Staley said.

The SEC Tournament presents a final opportunity to fine-tune strategies before the NCAA Tournament later this week. Staley explained how such an intense competition can serve as the perfect warm-up for March Madness.

“Our league is tough as it is, but the conference tournament is even tougher. It’s more condensed, and you’re going to get the best of the best playing at their peak this weekend. Our league consistently puts teams in a position to compete for a national championship,” she stated.

“Year after year, we push each other to the limit, forcing adjustments, challenging different styles of play. Bringing in Oklahoma and Texas only strengthens our ability to compete at the highest level.”

Staley acknowledged that she does not want to put additional pressure on her players heading into such a grueling stretch. Instead, she wants them to embrace the battles they have already overcome this season.

“It’s a gauntlet,” she admitted. “We’ve been through a gauntlet already. We just have to tap into some of the hardest stretches of our season and apply that experience this weekend.”

One key factor in South Carolina’s success has been its leadership on the court. Staley pointed out how moments of composure, like a recent instance where veteran guard Raven Johnson helped calm a frustrated teammate, showcase the team’s growth.

“We’ve seen that over and over again,” Staley said. “Whether it was during the Kentucky game or Ole Miss, the veterans step in, keep everyone focused, and make sure we’re staying on track.

“We’ve been emphasizing keeping the main thing. The main thing—being unflappable, unshakable, unbothered. No matter the environment, no matter the circumstances, we have to trust our habits.”

Staley was also asked about South Carolina’s consistent ability to attract top-tier talent, including multiple McDonald’s All-Americans. She made it clear that success in recruiting is about more than just bringing in elite players—it’s about finding athletes who fit into the program’s culture.

“That’s the point—you’re supposed to recruit the best players,” she said with a smile. “I would imagine that no coach in the country is turning down McDonald’s All-Americans. But just because a player has that title doesn’t automatically mean they’ll be a great fit or a great player for us.

“For South Carolina, we attract them not just because of our winning tradition but because of how we develop players, instill discipline, and prepare them for the professional level.”

She added, “It’s not just about the player. We build relationships with the entire household. If the household is happy, we’ve done our job. And judging by the number of happy households we’ve created, I’d say we’re doing something right.”

    The Gamecocks’ Road Ahead

With the tournament set to begin Friday for top-seeded South Carolina, Staley remains focused on ensuring her team is mentally and physically prepared. She understands the intensity of this stage of the season and is confident in the resilience her team has developed.

“We deliver time and time again,” she reiterated. “We always put ourselves in a position to compete at the highest level. Now it’s about staying disciplined, staying sharp, and executing when it matters most.”
