American rapper Plies is a diehard South Carolina Gamecocks fan. The $6 million worth rapper (according to Celebrity Net Worth) has always expressed his admiration for head coach Dawn Staley and her impact on the culture.
This time, as Tessa Johnson added 15 points in the Gamecocks’ 87-64 win over Kentucky, Plies was once again in full praise. The veteran rapper hit back at Johnson’s doubters. Expressing his support for the young Gamecocks guard, he wrote on X:
“They Wanted @tessajohnsonnn To Be Struggling So Bad!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 @GamecockWBB.”
Tessa Johnson struggled in the last two appearances before the game against Kentucky. She was listed out for the game against Missouri due to an “upper body contusion.” In fact, there were doubts around her appearance for this game as well.
This was Johnson breaking out of a late-season slump, scoring 10 straight points during an 11-0 Gamecock run to turn the game into a blowout. Johnson, who was 4-21 from three in her last three games, shot 3-4 on Saturday to score 15 points. Coach Dawn Staley had some words of appreciation for her junior guard.
“I thought she did a great job at mixing it up, driving it at the basket, pulling up, getting to the free-throw line because her skill set speaks to all of those things,” Dawn Staley said. “I know she’s known as shooting threes. But, I mean, she’s really good at scoring the basketball.”
The Gamecocks have now advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament, where fans await Tessa Johnson to continue with such a stellar performance to win the conference title.
Plies Had Once Asked The Gamecocks Players To Get Off TikTok
Last year in the NCAA Tournament, the Gamecocks escaped with a narrow 71-67 victory over No. 4 Maryland, thus avoiding humiliation.
However, Plies was not quite happy about it. He took to X and wrote some very strong words for the players and the team, urging them to get off the social media platform TikTok.
“🗣️ I BETTER NOT SEE ANOTHER DAMN TIK TOK VIDEO THE REST OF THIS WEEKEND!!!! 😡 WE NEED TO BE IN THE GYM GETTING UP SHOTS!!! TIME TO LOCK IN OR WE GOING HOME!! ENOUGH OF THIS SH*T!! ITS ALL ABOUT ADVANCING SO I’LL TAKE IT!!! BUT WE BETTER THAN THIS!! @GamecockWBB,” he wrote.
Here, he was specifically referring to Tessa Johnson and Chloe Kitts, who had been posting TikTok videos throughout the tournament. Plies’ only concern was that the players not stray away from the ultimate goal.
