Dawn Staley has been a top coach for about 26 years now. She started her coaching journey in 2000 with Temple, and she has been with the South Carolina Gamecocks since 2008. In the 18 years she has been in charge, Staley has changed the face of women’s basketball. After being an elite player herself in both college and the WNBA, she excelled in coaching as well.
Staley nurtured some of the greatest talents in women’s basketball at the Gamecocks. From the legendary A’ja Wilson to stars like Aliyah Boston, Allisha Gray, Tyasha Harris, Kelsey Mitchell, and now players like Raven Johnson and Tessa Johnson, just to name a few. She has won three national championships with the Gamecocks and has built a legacy in South Carolina.
Due to her resume and the type of person she is, Staley is one of the most respected figures in the basketball world. Her kindness and motivation are also features of how she earned her legacy. There was yet another example of that recently. After Southern University won its first round game of the March Madness against Samford, Dawn Staley sent them some special gifts as they prepared to face the mighty Gamecocks. She sent everyone Louis Vuitton perfumes and then shared why she did that.
“A couple of them said, ‘You smell good, what are you wearing?’ And I told them what I was wearing. Then, when I got home, my friend who works at the Louis store had sent me some samples of what I wear. Let me just give them to them. I just had enough of it to give to the entire team, and that was it. That was just a small gesture. I had them, and I probably wouldn’t use them. They could utilize them, and I just did it,” coach Staley shared.
