Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has become a viral meme because of the pointing gesture she makes when she talks trash to opponents during games. However, partner brands would not be allowed to market that gesture, with WNBPA citing that they typically do not want to monetize behavior that takes place during confrontations between players.
Of course, this has raised a lot of eyebrows and has led WNBA reporter Seerat Sohi to doubt that this could affect Sophie Cunningham’s bottom line. She also pointed out that the Fever star could likely make more money for herself by licensing the gesture than from WNBPA licensed materials.
“I honestly doubt that it will impact Cunningham’s bottom line. Sophie could likely make more money licensing her image individually, as (I believe) a portion of all proceeds from WNBPA licensed materials is distributed to the whole member base, as it was during CBA negotiations,” she tweeted.
That viral finger-pointing gesture happened during a confrontation with Phoenix Mercury star DeWanna Bonner. The pointing gesture is believed to have been made to mock Bonner, who played for the Fever last season but left midway.
Sophie Cunningham Has Not Thought Of Monetizing The Viral Finger-Point Yet
With the WNBPA refusing to market her viral gesture, the question now is, will Sophie Cunningham actually market it herself? During her appearance on the FIFA World Cup on Fox After Hours with James Corden, she was asked if she would market it herself, and here is her answer:
“I didn’t even give that thought,” she said.
In an ironic twist, this has happened before, and it involved Cunningham as well. Kahleah Copper produced shirts of herself staring down an opponent without the help of the WNBPA, and that opponent that she was staring down was none other than Sophie Cunningham.
