Sophie Cunningham has become a fan favorite among Indiana Fever fans. After playing back-to-back games against the Storm and the Liberty, she hosted over 300 kids for a youth basketball camp on Sunday.
Last month, her Fever teammate Lexie Hull also held her youth basketball camp and created lasting memories for many kids. Hull didn’t take it easy on the kids and was seen blocking their shots on the court. During a media interaction, Cunningham was asked:
“Did Lexie give you any pointers leading the camp?”
“No, but I know that she blocked some little boy, so I’m gonna be nicer than Lexie at one point in my life. So, I’m gonna try and not block a little kid today,” Cunningham responded.
Sophie Cunningham planned to beat Hull at being nice during her youth basketball camp. However, she ended up abandoning the plan and was seen blocking shots of boys and girls at her camp. She even posted up in the paint in one matchup.
Even though the kids were having fun at the camp, Cunningham helped create a competitive environment that could inspire the boys and girls in attendance. Other than playing basketball with the kids, the Fever star also interacted with them and clicked pictures, doing her signature point pose.
Sophie Cunningham said that these events are important as they’ll inspire more kids, especially girls, to fall in love with the sport.
“You see these camps getting bigger, you see the WNBA platform getting bigger, and so with that, that means there’s more on our plate to give back as much as possible, and this is one of the ways we do that,” she said.
The massive turnout was a result of families traveling from across Indiana and other states. Cunningham was very happy that she got a chance to inspire the next generation and give back to the community that has been supporting the league for years.
Sophie Cunningham’s Message To Young Kids
Cunningham is one of the most popular basketball stars in the world. While admired by fans of all ages, she understands her responsibility towards kids who look up to her. During the media interaction, she said that she wants to inspire kids, especially girls, to be themselves.
“One of my biggest messages to little boys too, but really little girls, is it’s okay to be feisty,” she said. “It’s okay to be sassy. It’s okay to go out there, work hard and sweat, but also be girly if you want. I think you can be all of it. All these kids are so sweet, and I’m just out here trying to give them confidence and encourage them.”
The Indiana Fever are currently on a two-game winning streak. They will play the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
