WNBA Fans Divided Over League’s Massive 50-Game Expansion

The WNBA has announced a major change to its regular-season format, expanding it to a 50-game schedule from the 2027 season. Currently, the season features 44 regular-season games, but the league is in a development phase and looks to expand its wings with the adoption of the new CBA deal. However, fans have been skeptical about the new change.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said that the demand for WNBA has peaked, and the expansion is proof that the league aims to capitalize on the momentum. The increase in games will give fans more opportunities to witness their favorite stars and increase competitiveness.

WNBA Communications shared the update on X:

“The WNBA announced today that the league will expand its regular season schedule to 50 games in 2027.”

Fans in the comments section were divided about the new change in the WNBA schedule. One user highlighted an issue with the load management for players and wrote:

“I have mixed feelings about this move, to be honest. The question is how the rosters will stay healthy in the long run.”

Another user highlighted an issue and wrote:

“Damn, they didn’t even try to ease into expanding the regular season. Just straight to the deep in.”

One more user suggested that the period of the season should also be increased with the number of games, and wrote:

“Expand the roster and actual length of the season in days as well to prevent injuries”

One more fan highlighted a similar concern and wrote:

“So are you extending the schedule, extending the team size so that the added games don’t put too much additional wear on the players?”

WNBA commissioner says the schedule change reflects the growth in the league

Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and the younger generation of WNBA players have brought growth to the league. The new CBA deal has given players financial freedom and opportunities to grow in the league.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in her statement, via the NBA’s website:

“This move reflects our commitment to growing the game and creating more opportunities for fans to watch the best players in the world and experience the extraordinary talent and competition that define the WNBA.”

The league has not yet announced the dates and other details of the expanded schedule. However, the new schedule will surely impact the viewership and recognition of the sport.
