Caitlin Clark’s rough outing against the Golden State Valkyries has caught national attention. More specifically, one play in which she complained about in which she received contact from another player’s knee to her quad, leaving a bruise. Clark’s complaint was not the only time the play was brought up at the post-game press conference.
Clark’s coach spoke about the play after the game. When asked about the play by a reporter in a video clip posted on X on Wednesday by The Athletic’s James Boyd, Fever head coach Stephanie White was sarcastic in a quick response.
“They said Caitlin initiated the contact,” she said. “She seems to always be initiating the contact.”
White’s sarcastic comment seemed to back up Clark, who alleged that she was hit in the second quarter in the 88-75 loss. No foul was given for the contact.
One replay showed the play in question in a post on X posted on Wednesday.
In the slow-motion clip, Clark is seen driving at the basket and making contact with the defender. The defender appears to also make contact with enough force to leave her falling to the ground.
WNBA Fans React to Stephanie White’s Defense of Caitlin Clark
The post-game defense of Caitlin Clark drew a tsunami of reactions from fans. Many vented that Stephanie White underreacted and didn’t do enough in the moment. Some fans of the Fever took the statement as another bullet point in the list of reasons why she hasn’t lived up to expectations.
More fans called out the coach in response to her statement.
Clark and White will not face the Golden State Valkyries again in the regular season. As such, fans can only wait to see if Clark and White will continue to call out the officiating in future games against other opponents. Either way, fans will remember the night for some time to come.
