Sophie Cunningham has had an eventful week, to say the least. On the court, the Fever guard has been lighting up the scoreboard, sinking six triples in a 109-75 rout of the Las Vegas Aces.
Just a day before, Cunningham made a surprise appearance at UFC 329, serving as the ring girl for the first (and only) round of the Benoit Saint Denis vs. Paddy Pimblett co-main event. Recapping the events of the past few days on her Instagram account, Cunningham wrote a hilarious self-caption.
“the broadest 3 point shootin no chest havin ring girl you’ve ever seen”
One of the images in this photo dump shows a full circle moment, as Cunningham poses for a pic with UFC President Dana White after a Fever game. White, who was wearing a Cunningham shirt in the picture, apparently didn’t tell her about her ring girl duties until minutes before she held up the Round 1 card.
Indeed, Cunningham’s popularity has skyrocketed this year for a number of different reasons. Even before she appeared on a UFC broadcast, Cunningham graced the pages of Sports Illustrated in a swimsuit shoot alongside Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier.
Then, Cunningham took over the internet with her finger-pointing meme. While her pointing gesture aimed at DeWanna Bonner on June 22 occurred during a tense moment, the meme that ensued would result in hilarity all across social media.
No less than the White House has released their own version of the meme, combining a clip of Cunningham pointing at the camera with a video of U.S. President Donald Trump doing some pointing of his own.
“Me and Dana Have Become Friends”: Sophie Cunningham Opens Up on Experience as Ring Girl for UFC 329
Earlier this week, Sophie Cunningham talked about becoming somewhat of a buddy to UFC President Dana White.
At the same time, the Fever guard had some criticism to dish out for the Conor McGregor vs. Max Holloway main event, which ended in anticlimactic fashion after McGregor blew out his knee and was ruled unable to continue.
“Me and Dana have kind of become friends. He is an amazing dude…I went to my first live fight last night, which was so cool. The main fight was a little, ugh, but the experience overall was wonderful.”
Cunningham added that she is happy to see entities like the UFC getting WNBA players “involved,” as this is an opportunity for the players to raise the profile of the league.
