The Los Angeles Sparks lost more than just the game when they were beaten 78-58 by the Golden State Valkyries on Monday night; they also lost center Cameron Brink once again.
Late in the game, Brink appeared to tweak her ankle. The Sparks star did not see it coming. She got back up, limped gingerly and headed to the locker room. She finished with 10 points and two rebounds in 15 minutes.
The Sparks coach Lynne Roberts had no details on the nature or extent of the injury immediately after the game. However, ahead of Tuesday’s matchup with the Lynx, Roberts provided a new update on Brink, and it is certainly less than ideal.
Roberts confirmed that Brink has an ankle sprain and is expected to be sidelined short term. The week-to-week nature of Brink’s injury provides little certainty about when she could return.
Ever since she entered the WNBA, Cameron Brink has been plagued by rotten luck with injuries. She suffered a torn ACL that caused her to miss 13 months of action, and she has been through a lot. As if that wasn’t enough, she also suffered a broken nose earlier this season.
The Sparks will have to be certain of her availability before putting her back on the court.
Who Replaces Cameron Brink in the Sparks’ Lineup?
The timing of this latest setback couldn’t have been worse for Cameron Brink, as she appeared to be finding her rhythm with the Sparks.
Not only does Brink play important minutes off the bench, but she has also been a defensive catalyst. She is averaging 9.2 points and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 53.8%.
With Brink out for a while, it is likely that Sania Feagin will help fill the void in the frontcourt. The 23-year-old was selected 21st in the second round of the 2025 WNBA draft. She has appeared in only two games this season, with foot injury playing a major role in her limited availability.
The Sparks are back in action tonight against the Minnesota Lynx to begin a quick two-game homestand. LA )7-7) is eighth in the standings, while Minnesota )11-3) enters the contest atop the WNBA.
