Tyler Marsh Addresses Skylar Diggins’ Benching With Detailed Answer

The Chicago Sky made a big decision Tuesday when Skylar Diggins was seemingly informed about her starting spot. The change came with the return of Courtney Vandersloot, who had been out since June 2025 due to a torn ACL.

Vandersloot returned last month and was on a minutes restriction for a few games. However, she started Tuesday’s 77-66 win over the Phoenix Mercury, scoring seven points in 18 minutes while shooting 2-for-6.

After the game, Sky coach Tyler Marsh answered media questions about the change in the lineup:

“Felt like it was necessary for now. We’ll see how it looks, like, moving forward. When YOU’RE tryING TO find some rhythm, you gotta make some adjustments that come with making some tough decisions at times, but Sky has been a high-volume minutes player for us all year. She had a huge impact, and the level of preparation she puts into her body and the work ethic that she brings it can’t go understated. She continues to be a big part of who we are and what we do.”

Diggins did not play in the game, with the team saying she had right knee pain. However, fans have speculated about her absence from the team. Notably, she shared some frustrated posts about the decision on Tuesday on Instagram.

Although the team won the game, Vandersloot wasn’t comfortable shooting and played for a limited time. The medical staff might not want to put extra exertion on her injury.

Can the internal unrest between Skylar Diggins and the management harm the Sky squad?

This is not the first time there has been an internal battle between players for a starting spot. Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum faced a similar issue in Las Vegas. In most cases, one runs the offense, and another adds to off-ball shooting. However, in the case of Skylar Diggins and Courtney Vandersloot, they are Hall of Fame-caliber point guards who thrive with the ball in their hands. Moreover, the Sky already features other shooting guards, Natasha Cloud and Sydney Taylor.

Diggins not playing might not be just her knee pain. Given her frustration on social media, she might be upset with the decision. However, Vandersloot said that Diggins’ playing style complements hers and the two can play together on the court. But that might take some time.

For now, playing one off the bench might be the only choice, but the team can manage playing time in a way that both get enough minutes to make an impact. As the season moves forward, the picture might be clearer for Marsh to pick a favorite based on performance.
