Aliyah Boston opened up about Alyssa Thomas’ hard foul on Caitlin Clark that made a lot of noise in the WNBA world. The Phoenix Mercury guard was given a one-game suspension after the incident was upgraded to a flagrant foul 2 after a league review a day after Phoenix beat the Indiana Fever.
On “Post Moves with Candace Parker & Aliyah Boston” on Wednesday, the Fever center talked to co-host Candace Parker about the high-profile controversial foul that later led to hate on social media against Thomas:
“If it’s a flagrant 2, it’s flagrant 2, like that should have never been done. Like, you don’t put your hand on someone’s throat and, like, then near kick them on the floor. It’s basketball game, like what are we doing? So, obviously that was the right call.”
The foul remained controversial days after the game and the league review as well, as Thomas talked about the hate and death threats she received from social media users. Meanwhile, Clark left the Mercury game in the third quarter due to nagging back issues and hasn’t returned yet.
Boston has taken up the responsibility in the absence of her star teammate. She had a double-double against the Las Vegas Aces with 18 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to two blocks. She took over the paint, capitalizing on A’ja Wilson’s absence.
“Sometimes you need the break,” Aliyah Boston explains her rough first half against the Aces
On the show, Aliyah Boston also talked about her performance in the game. Although she had a double-double, 11 of her 18 points came in the second half. She did not start the game well, but eventually, she got into the groove and even hit some deep shots, going 3-for-4 from the 3-point line.
Talking about her first-half woes, the four-time WNBA All-Star said:
“Take me out, let me go change my contacts, let’s see if there’s anything else that needs to happen. like, let’s go back. … I just sat down and just put my hand like this (praying gesture) and silence for a second. Sometimes, you just need to regroup. I just really sat there, and at some point, I was like, ‘you know, god, just give me the strength. … Sometimes, you need the break ‘CAUSE the little timeouts not enough.”
Meanwhile, some reports have suggested that Caitlin Clark might be healthy and ready for the Fever’s next game against the LA Sparks. The team has won two consecutive games without the guard, and Indiana coach Stephanie White will look to keep it intact when Tyasha Harris goes back to her bench role.
