“Sophie Really Wanted a Longer Term”: Fever Fans Torn Over Sophie Cunningham’s Return to Indiana on One-Year Deal

The news of Sophie Cunningham has finally arrived, as the Indiana Fever has gone into a frenzy of signings lately in the WNBA free agency. ESPN analyst Alexa Philippou shared on X that the franchise has re-signed the Fever guard with a one-year deal, keeping Tres Leches intact. However, fans are not satisfied.

Philippou posted the news on X and wrote:

“Breaking: Sophie Cunningham has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Indiana Fever, sources told ESPN.”

Cunningham was sidelined in August 2025 after suffering a torn right ACL and only played 30 games. She brought some elite perimeter shooting, mainly off the bench, draining 43.2% of her deep shots last season.

Fans unhappy with Sophie Cunningham’s short-term commitment

Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham played just 13 games together around July and showcased explosive chemistry. That led some fans to be unhappy with the one-year deal she was offered by the team. One wrote:

“I’m very happy but a little concerned because I know Sophie really wanted a longer term. Maybe she is expecting Kelsey to move on next year which might mean more money if she has an impactful year.”

Another highlighted that Lexie Hull had earlier pointed out a multi-year deal with Cunningham and wrote:

“Lexie signed multi year why only 1 for Sophie that isn’t good sign”

One more user connected the one-year signing to her leg injury and wrote:

“Glad they brought her back. The chemistry of that team is great. Shame it’s only a one year deal but might be a prove it contact with her leg injury.”

Another user stated that Cunningham might have a strategy behind signing a short-term deal and wrote:

“I’m very happy but a little concerned because I know Sophie really wanted a longer term. Maybe she is expecting Kelsey to move on next year which might mean more money if she has an impactful year.”

Another one let their feelings out about the organization signing the guard with a one-year deal and wrote:

“One year? WTF? Did Sophie turn down multiple years or did Sophie? Athletes don’t do one year prove it deals unless there’s no other options. They want multiple years in case of injury. Same old Fever bullshit ruining this organization.”

With Clark setting the offense in transition, Aliyah Boston running the floor, and Cunningham on the 3-point line, they can bring a lot of firepower this season if everything remains fine, health-wise. The Fever has fixed almost every loophole, as they recently decided to add Monique Billings and Tyasha Harris to the mix.
