Carmelo Anthony Urges Dallas Wings To Pair Azzi Fudd With Paige Bueckers For One Very Clear Reason

Former NBA player-turned-analyst Carmelo Anthony shared his thoughts on the Dallas Wings’ decision to pick Azzi Fudd in the upcoming WNBA draft. The franchise picked their face in Paige Bueckers last season and once again have the first pick. While several analysts have suggested that the team could look to pick a frontcourt piece in the draft, Melo believed that they should pick Azzi Fudd instead.

After a dismal March Madness in terms of production, Fudd’s prospects severely dipped in the latest update. NCAA winner Lauren Betts and Spanish sensation Awa Fam have made a lot of noise for the top pick because the management can be on the hunt for a dependable frontcourt piece to pair as a lob threat with Bueckers. However, the former New York Knick didn’t agree.

On the latest episode of his 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, the former forward shared his reasoning behind backing Fudd and said:

“I would do that because it’s proven. You know what I mean, it was like a one-and-done situation. It’s proven over four years, we know how to play together, we know how to win, we know each other… They are two of the smartest basketball players out there, you talk about high IQ type of players.”

Fudd and Bueckers have achieved considerable success together for four years under the banner of the UConn Huskies. They even led the team to the 12th NCAA championship last season, where Azzi Fudd was awarded the Most Outstanding Player after scoring 24 points in the final game.

Off the court, the two guards are in a relationship, and that chemistry has reflected on the court as well. They also won an Olympic gold together as U16 players. Melo believes that the duo can bring considerable success to the Wings as well if they get another opportunity to hoop together.

Can the Dallas Wings pick Azzi Fudd with top pick?

Even though Carmelo Anthony suggested the highly anticipated pairing of Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers should be the way to go for the Dallas Wings, their recent decisions have highlighted otherwise. The franchise has signed Arike Ogunbowale to a seven-figure extension after she averaged 15.5 points and 4.1 assists last season. She can be a dependable backup during non-Bueckers minutes.

Additionally, the Wings have also acquired center/forward Rayah Marshall, a backup frontcourt piece, which means they might look for a potential starter like Lauren Betts or Awa Fam. Fudd’s addition will only complicate the roster, which is already guard-heavy at the moment. Moreover, her recent dip in form can weaken her prospects of being paired with her long-term partner.
